Scoring Struggles Continue in Loss to Lightning

The Dallas Stars are shutout by the league’s best team losing 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.

Despite dominating puck possession and shots on goal for a majority of the game, the Dallas Stars lost their third straight game falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Dallas outshot Tampa Bay 35-21 but could not get a puck past Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy.  The Stars had plenty of opportunities in the game, including six power plays.  The man-advantage proved to be no advantage at all for Dallas as the team finished 0-for-6 on the power play.

Andrew Cogliano, acquired on Monday from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Devin Shore, made his Dallas debut skating on a line with Jason Spezza and Erik Condra.  Cogliano did not have a shot on goal but was noticeable with his skating ability and his ability to exit the defensive zone with regularity.

Even with the loss, the Stars remain in one of the two wild card spots, but that is more of a reflection of the conference-wide struggles for half of the Western Conference.  Dallas has numerous red flags, however, highlighted by scoring only 121 goals as a team through 47 games.  That is the lowest amount of any team currently in a playoff spot in either conference and the fourth lowest in the entire league.  Only Los Angeles (107 goals), Anaheim (113 goals), and Arizona (116 goals) have scored fewer goals than the Stars this season.

The Stars look to end their losing streak on Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings in a game that is sure to be high-scoring now that I’ve pointed out both teams have trouble scoring.

Stars Deal Devin Shore to Ducks

Devin Shore is headed to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for winger Andrew Cogliano.

The Dallas Stars traded winger Devin Shore to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday morning in exchange for winger Andrew Cogliano.

Shore, 24, has five goals and 17 points in 42 games with Dallas this season.  The former second round pick has struggled after a good start to the season going 25 straight games without a game.  Shore is still on pace for his third straight 30-point season.

Cogliano, 31, is struggling this season for Anaheim with just three goals and 11 points in 46 games.  Cogliano has consistently been a double-digit goal scorer over the duration of his career averaging 15 goals over the last five seasons.  Cogliano is an asset as a penalty killer and remains one of the best skaters in the league.

He is also known as the league’s iron man having played in 830 consecutive games, longest in North American sports during the span of his career.  His speed, durability, and, most importantly, the respect fellow players seem to have for him in the locker room likely drove this trade.  The Stars leadership has been called into question this year and Cogliano did wear an A for the Ducks.

Cogliano has two years remaining on his contract paying an average of $3.25 million per season.  He is expected to be in the lineup on Tuesday night with the Stars take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Khudobin Saves Stars Against Nashville

Stars win in Nashville thanks to a career-best game from goaltender Anton Khudobin.

Dallas goaltender Anton Khudobin made 49 saves on 49 shots shutting out the Nashville Predators in 2-0 win last night.  The Stars saw depth scoring come through with goals from wingers Tyler Pitlick and Mattias Janmark.  The Stars were outshot 49-30 in the game, but Khudobin saved the day with a career-best performance.  Khudobin posted his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.  The Stars return home on Saturday hosting the Detroit Red Wings.

Dickinson Does It Again, Stars Shutout the Bruins

The Dallas Stars beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 in overtime on Friday night at the American Airlines Center.

Jason Dickinson continued his stretch of strong play on Friday night scoring the game-winning goal in overtime helping the Dallas Stars beat the Boston Bruins 1-0.  Ben Bishop made 23 saves and got the shutout while Mattias Janmark got the assist on Dickinson’s game-winning goal.  Oddly, the 1-0 overtime win was the first in franchise history.

Both teams came into the game hurting with regulars out on both sides including John Klingberg, Devin Shore, Stephen Johns, and Marc Methot all out of the Dallas lineup.

After scoring five points in seven games this season for the Texas Stars of the AHL, defenseman Gavin Bayreuther made his NHL debut last night for the big club.  He was noticeable moving the puck with confidence finishing with a line of one shot, two penalty minutes, three blocked shots, and over 14 minutes of playing time, including two minutes and 35 seconds of power play time.

The two points on Friday were vital as the Stars have one of the most difficult weeks of the season ahead.  Dallas will play three games in four nights before Thanksgiving and then play a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday.  The long week begins Sunday against the New York Islanders.

Stars Beat The Sharks; Klingberg Expected To Miss Multiple Games

The Stars win against the San Jose Sharks but lose another player to injury.

Devin Shore scored twice, Anton Khudobin stopped 33 of 36 shots, and the Dallas Stars beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 last night at the American Airlines Center.  Dallas is now 6-3-1 in their last ten games and their 19 points are quietly tied for the sixth best in the NHL.

As Jason Garrett would say, the Stars did some good things on Thursday night.  Excellent passing – highlighted by a video game inspired goal by Gemel Smith on tape-to-tape passes by Miro Heiskanen and Jason Dickinson – Tyler Seguin finally broke his goal-scoring drought, and the Stars penalty kill returned to form against San Jose.

Thursday night, however, also came with bad news as defenseman John Klingberg was injured blocking a shot.  He is expected to miss multiple games and joins Marc Methot, Stephen Johns, and Connor Carrick as injured Stars defensemen.

Dallas is expected to call up defenseman Joel Hanley from the Texas Stars as the next man up.  Hanley will be in the lineup on Saturday when the Stars host the Nashville Predators.

Denis Gurianov Called Up

The Stars call up winger Denis Gurianov ahead of tonight’s game against the San Jose Sharks.

With a rash of injuries and a lack of scoring over the last few games, the Dallas Stars have called up winger Denis Gurianov from the Texas Stars of the AHL.  Gurianov is leading Texas in scoring and made a strong impression on the Stars coaching staff during training camp and the pre-season.  Gurianov will get a chance to play in the top-6 immediately; he is expected to start with Jamie Benn and Jason Spezza tonight against the San Jose Sharks.

Stars Beat The Cup Champs, Win Third Straight on the Road

The Stars win streak continues as they take down the reigning champs on Saturday night.

After starting the season with three straight losses away from the American Airlines Center, the Dallas Stars have bounced back in a big way winning three straight.

After winning two games in Eastern Canada against Montreal and Toronto, the Stars beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night.

After three grade A scoring chances in overtime for Tyler Seguin – including a penalty shot – Jason Dickinson buried a wrister to give the Stars two points. Dallas also got goals from Tyler Pitlick, Jason Spezza, and Jamie Benn.

The Stars are now 3-1 on this road trip and are a perfect 2-0 in November. Dallas gets a shot at two more points Monday night against the Boston Bruins.

Stars End Road Drought in Montreal

Dallas Stars earn their first road win of the season in a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

The Dallas Stars won their first road game of the season Tuesday night in Montreal beating the Canadiens 4-1. Devin Shore lead the way with one goal and two assists. Miro Heiskanen, Esa Lindell, and Alexander Radulov all added goals of their own.

After a disappointing loss in Detroit on Sunday, the Stars were able to weather an early Montreal storm and score the always important first goal of the game when Shore found Esa Lindell for the defenseman’s first goal of the season.

Heiskanen made it 2-0 on an impressive wrist shot in the second period, Shore scored after Montreal turned the puck over in front of their own net, and Radulov added an empty-net tally late in the third period.

Ben Bishop was strong in net tonight stopping 34 of 35 shots. The Stars finish the month of October with 12 points in 11 games (6 wins and 5 losses).

Dallas continues its road trip on Thursday night traveling to Toronto to skate against the Maple Leafs.

Daily Fantasy Plays – October 28, 2018

Tyler Seguin, Chris Tierney, and a trio of Carolina Hurricanes wingers are featured in today’s daily fantasy preview.

Hope you were able to take advantage of yesterday’s recommendations as Filip Forsberg (three goals), Artemi Panarin (two goals, one assist), and Henri Jokiharju (one assist) all provided tremendous value.  Let’s take a look at some of the players I like for Sunday.

  • From the Dallas Stars perspective, I like Tyler Seguin (FanDuel $7,700, DraftKings $7,900) and John Klingberg (FD $6,600, DK $6,500) in a match-up against the Detroit Red Wings.  Seguin hasn’t scored a goal in six games but has at least five shots on goal in five of those six games.  Only a matter of time.  Klingberg has been one of the highest scoring defenseman in the NHL this season and is typically a safe bet in daily fantasy.  Detroit is going with Jonathan Bernier in net; Bernier currently sports a brutal 4.33 goals against average and an .833 save percentage.

  • Other high end players I like for Sunday: Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane (FD $8,600, DK $7,600), Dallas goaltender Ben Bishop (FD $8,700, DK $8,300), Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (FD $8,100, DK $8,400) and Vegas winger Jonathan Marchessault (FD $7,200, DK $7,100).

  • Mid-priced players I like for Sunday: Ottawa Senators center Matt Duchene (FD $5,800, DK $5,300), Carolina Hurricanes winger Teuvo Teravainen (FD $5,800, DK $6,500) Vegas winger Reilly Smith (FD $5,500, DK $5,500), Carolina winger Michael Ferland (FD $5,100, DK $6,100), Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin (FD $4,300, DK $4,400), and Ottawa defenseman Maxime Lajoie (FD $4,100, DK $5,000).

  • Value plays I like for Sunday: Ottawa center Chris Tierney (FD $4,600, DK $4,900), Vegas winger Alex Tuch (FD $4,400, DK $5,300), Carolina winger Andrei Svechnikov (FD $3,700, DK $3,900), Dallas defenseman Miro Heiskanen (FD $3,700, DK $4,000), and Ottawa defenseman Cody Ceci (FD $3,500, $3,700).
